About Conversion Coatings

In the conversion coating process, the metal surface of a part is converted to a superficial layer containing a complex mixture of chemical compounds. The chemical film is soft when freshly formed, but once dried and aged, the film becomes more abrasive resistant. Conversion coatings provide excellent corrosion resistance.

We use Alodine®, Metalast®, and Iridite® brands of chromium conversion coating chemicals, and we can provide clear and gold coatings. Castings are one of our specialties, and military certification is available on request.

Chromate Coatings

Paint, lacquer, and organic finishes bond exceedingly well to chromate conversion coatings. In addition, the chromate coatings prevent loss of pain adhesion due to under film corrosion.

Chromate conversion films vary in color depending on the chemical being used and the base metal being coated. Colors range from clear, to light iridescent, to gold. Greater corrosion protection is provided with formulations that give a golden color, as these coatings tend to be thicker. A variegated appearance may be obtained when the base metal is non-uniform (i.e., welds in wrought materials and castings).

METALAST TCP-HF is a trivalent chromium replacement for hexavalent chromium based post treatments that meets or exceeds performance requirements of current hexavalent products with no adverse environmental impact.

Iridite 14-2 is a chemical process that produces a protective chromate conversion film on aluminum and aluminum alloys. Application is by dip, brush, swab, or spray, producing coatings ranging from clear to dark yellow. The darker coatings providing the greatest corrosion protection. The coating can be used as a final finish or can be dyed various colors. It can also serve as a base for paints and high performance top coats, lacquers, or as a base for rubber bonding.

Non Chromate Coatings

ALODINE 5200 is a chromium free product specifically formulated for treating non-ferrous metals. Spray or immersion applications may be used. This process provides an excellent base for bonding of adhesives and organic finishes.
